Rescue Stories

The vast majority of our kitties are rescued from the streets, from feral colonies or other dangerous situations.

Here are a few of their  stories.

Adoption Information

- Our adoption fee is 100$ for a single cat, 150$ for two.  Additional donations are always appreciated as the fee does not cover all costs.

- All of our cats have tested negative for the Feline Leukemia Virus.

- All of our cats will be spayed or neutered by the time of adoption.

- All of our cats available for adoption will have been treated for parasites and received at least their first rabies and distemper vaccinations before adoption.

- All of our cats are microchipped.

- We may at any given time have cats that can be adopted as outside/barn cats.  Often these are feral cats who need to be relocated from an unsafe place.  For more information on this, please contact us!

- All of our cats now qualify for a month of Health Insurance through ShelterCare.

We take rehoming our cats very seriously and want to find them stable, loving homes where they will be well cared for until the end of their days.  Please read up on our Adoption Guidelines before putting in an application!

All adoptions will be conducted by appointment only.  We will call or email you to schedule your appointment once your application is approved!

If you would like to take one or more of our wonderful kitties into your heart and home, please complete and return our Adoption Application by email (f.rescue.assoc@gmail.com), snail mail (P.O. Box 396, Stevenson, Maryland 21153), or fax (631-822-2134).  Please feel free to call us at 443-320-2231 with any questions.

Fostering to Adopt

We may be willing to allow you to 'test out' a cat or kitten in your home before adoption.  This process is called fostering-to-adopt.  If you decide to go this route, for security's sake we do require that you fill out the regular adoption application as well as pay the adoption fee.  We will refund the fee should you decide not to adopt upon return of the cat(s).  If you go through with the adoption, we will keep it.  The general period for a foster to adopt is a few weeks, unless medical needs or age necessitate that the cat(s) or kitten(s) stay longer (a good example is young kittens who are not old enough to be spayed or neutered).

If you are interested in doing a foster-to-adopt, please review our guide to caring for your newly-adopted kitty:  Your Adopted Cat.  Complete the Adoption Application and Foster Family Agreement, and return them by email (f.rescue.assoc@gmail.com), snail mail (P.O. Box 396, Stevenson, Maryland 21153), or fax (631-822-2134).

See our volunteer page for info on plain, old-fashioned fostering.  Please feel free to call us at 443-320-2231 with any questions.

Permanent Residents / Virtual Adoptions

Here are a few of the kitties that for some reason cannot go up for adoption.  Other residents include cats adopted from other groups and more unadoptables who are being permanently fostered (for which I am receiving zero support).

Of course I love them all!

You may sponsor any cat on this site by making a donation to the Feline Rescue Association.

All you have to do is include their name, say, in the Memo line on your check or in a separate note or email.

When I found Big in a bad neighborhood he was so outgoing I had to take him! No one ever claimed him and he was in bad shape (had two kinds of intestinal parasites) and not neutered. His name was supposed to be Oliver, but I hadn't intended to keep him and kept calling him 'Big Kitty'. Now he is stuck with 'Big.'

Recently, I rushed Big to an emergency vet because he was breathing funny.

He was diagnosed with Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy.  A daily regiment of three different medications has kept him in good shape, and we are hoping for the best.

It was the middle of the incredibly bitter winter when I got an email about a cat living by a gas station.  I didn't have a trap on hand, but knew I had to try.  I immediately drove to the location and tried to find the cat.  I wasn't able to catch her that night (she was very feral), but I did leave food for her and a carrier lined with newspaper for shelter.  I tried to trap her every evening over the next few days and was shocked when I found one of her six-week old kittens in my trap!  I trapped both Veruca and her two kittens that night.  Now she is spayed, clean, well-fed, warm, and happy.  She loves the other cats here, particularly Delilah, though she is not so fond of the people!

Larry was in a cage at the rescue I worked for until May 2007 for several months.  I took pity on him and decided to take him home.  He has been here ever since.

Larry is a very shy boy, and very large!  Despite his size, he is easily intimidated by humans.  He is not feral but very frightened.  However, I believe he is happy here with the other cats and some measure of freedom.  I love him very much.

Marauder was my first ever rescue.  I trapped him as a four-month-old feral in a used car lot.  He had no reliable food source and no clean water to drink.  When I took him home he was very shy, but a few months of socialization and one friend (Lydia) later, he was doing alright.  Now he is relatively friendly to me and my family, while he is always going to be a little skittish.
